Download HotKey from App Store

With HotKey You can define keyboard shortcuts to launch Applications or to open folders in Finder.  Another way is to open the Apps by selecting them from the Status-Menu in Your Mac’s menu bar.

Another feature:

Show the content of the clipboard with one keyboard shortcut.

Extend HotKey:

The functionality can be expanded even further by installing an AppleScript in the Application-Specific Scripts Folder. The Script can be installed after activating the feature using the following Terminal commands ( Utilities / Terminal ) :

After activating the feature the Apple-Script can be installed within the Preferences-Dialog of HotKey. With this feature HotKey can open Apps using selected files or folders from the foremost finder window. You can open selected files with your E-Mail-Client or with your preferred Editor with one shortcut. Or just open the Terminal at the position of the selected file or folder.

Have fun

  1. I’m using HotKey on Mac book Pro early 2015.

When I try to command some shortcut that I set, if some file is selected by click, the shortcut doesn’t normally work and open the selected file on the app which I set as shortcut.

I want shortcuts to ignore any file selection.
Or it can be an option adjustable in preference.

    Thank you for HotKey

    1. Hello Kang Hee Kim,

the Option to open files can be easily deactivated. Go to the preferences and select “Options”.
In this dialog You can deselect the checkboxes “Selected file(s)” and “Selected folder(s)”.

  2. Hallo,

es sieht so aus, als ob in Sierra Hotkeys, die einen Ordern öffnen nicht mehr funktionieren – oder genauer: nach einem Neustart funktionieren sie nicht mehr; ok, wenn man sie gerade neu definiert hat.

  3. Hi,
Is there a functional reason I couldn’t use this on Yosemite (10.10.5)? It won’t let me download unless i have 10.11 installed.

I was looking for a replacement for Apptivate, and this was perfect, but won’t install on Yosemite.

Thanks for considering making it workable on Yosemite.

    1. Hello,
I’m sorry, but it won’t be able to make HotKey run on Yosemite. You will need at least El Capitan.

  4. I can not open document files by using keyboard shortcut on MacOS Sierra. The preferences about document files lose at OS restart .
I can open apps and I was able to open document files on MacOSX.

    Hotkey Ver.1.2.3
    MacOS Sierra ver10.12 JP
    MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015)

    1. The Problem is fixed with Version 1.2.4. After upgrading from the AppStore the Apple-Script must be updated within the Preferences-Dialog of HotKey.

  5. It does not work after the update. Ends after using a hot key.

    macOS Sierra 10.12.1
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011)
    HotKey 1.2.4
